Cookery School

The thing with this one is, I sort of believe that the book referenced below exists. Perhaps the person got mixed up. Perhaps this is just some Halloween cookbook. Within the world of Monfeld, things can get this out of whack.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

The main bookshop in Monfeld was superb. A real champion all the way until the final days. But books are expensive. Twenty quid for something that will be twenty pence in a charity shop in five years. Seven quid for a book you can read in an afternoon. No thank you.

Instead we always visited the discount shop. The one where you get sports autobiographies at eighty percent off. Wellness books that have falle out of fashion, next to stationary kits and wrapping paper.

Whoever owned the company was not fussed about the stock after Monfeld closed down. When I broke in the automatic doors were wedged open, but most of the stock still lined the shelves. Give the floor a quick tidy, and you are back to normal.

It was fun to have one more look round by torchlight. All the classics discount were there, from how to read Tarot, to cheap hardbacks on World War Two.

I took one from a table. This was a kids cookbook, an old school kind with flat food photography rather than stylised drawings. The recipes were solid but fun. Brownies and chocolate nest cakes. Cheese straws and pancakes. The most novel aspect was reading in the dark.

Then the pumpkins had sad faces. So followed a Hanged Man made of cake. Eyes watching from burnt sandwiches. A giant row of shadows, their heads bowed.

I examined the text under that last one. The tone was gleeful, and described how these were the cakes for those who deserved it. If you needed to bake them then do so, and laugh at those who eat and then recoil in fear.

Something creaked in the hallway outside. This signalled it was time to go. The book still remains within the discount shop. Nothing would have stopped me taking it, but this did not seem like a good idea.

I wish I had taken some photos though. And taken a trip to the supermarket on the way home. Just to know what happens when you unleash those recipes upon the world.
